Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – Philip K. Dick
Blade Runner is loosely based on the 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? written by Philip K. Dick.
The novel is set in post-apocalyptic San Francisco and follows Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter on a mission to retire six escaped Nexus-6 model androids.
The term Blade Runner doesn’t actually appear anywhere in the novel. Scriptwriter Hampton Fancher borrowed the term from the title of a book by William S. Burroughs ironically titled Blade Runner: A Movie.
Later editions of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? use Blade Runner in the title.
